I love Mondays! And I love surrounding myself with people who love Mondays… Why? Because the people that love Mondays energise, challenge and inspire me.

Monday is a brilliant day for three reasons:

  1. Because I feel well rested from the weekend,
  2. I’m prepared because I make time on Sunday afternoons to plan the week ahead,
  3. Because I can start making all my weekend ideas happen!

In contrast to the people that say TGIM are those that talk about ‘hump day’ and every single friday their facebook status is TGIF.  Over the last few years I’ve actively removed the TGIF’s from my facebook feed (and my life) and slowly added more and more people that love Monday’s.  I am now constantly energised by people doing amazing things with their lives.

There are many sayings about the effect of the people we choose to hang out with. The one I like best: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

Are there more TGIF’s or TGIM’s in your life?  If the balance isn’t right, consider some changes.

Having someone accountable for EVERYTHING is a key discipline of successful fast growing businesses.

Verne Harnish, a mentor and advisor I have used for years has a very firm view on accountability.  In Verne’s words, “If everyone is accountable, no one is accountable!”.

At The Physio Co, I’ve learnt the hard way that Verne is spot on.  These days, every job is assigned to one person and only one person.  Never two people and never a group or committee.

Of course the person accountable has the freedom to recruit other people to help if need be.  But, that one person is accountable and I know who to ask for an update.  The result: things get done.

Accountability.  It has to rest with someone.

In my experience, people that are a culture-fit will effortlessly live your core values.

How do they do it with such ease? It’s simple: their personal values will be very similar to the core values of the business.  Therefore, when they are living, breathing & sharing the core values, they are just being themselves!

It doesn’t get anymore effortless than that.

PS – I’ll be presenting a webinar on “Motivating Your Staff”, to help launch Business Victoria’s new blog next Tuesday.  To register, click here.

The annual BRW Best Places to Work edition is out and The Physio Co is the 12th Best Place to Work in Australia for 2011!

As the CEO, it’s both humbling and exciting to know that our fast growing team rates The Physio Co so highly.  In fact, the results of the independent survey show that 92% of TPCers would honestly say “this is a great place to work”.  That makes me smile!

The Physio Co’s journey as a Great Place to Work started in 2009 when we were ranked no. 37.  In 2010, we jumped to no. 19 and in 2011 we have risen to no. 12. With this progress our Painted Picture of 2012 goal to make the top 10 by 31 December 2012 is alive!

The Physio Co team is just fantastic, I can’t thank them enough for their hard work and dedication.  What a milestone!

Short bursts of exercise are an awesome way to recharge the batteries.  Getting started is the important part.

This afternoon I found myself with an extra half an hour up my sleeve before preparing for an important event.  My options were: a) have a rest in the hotel room b) do some work c) go for a walk around the block d) hit the hotel gym/pool for a quick workout.

I chose option d. Why? Why not!

Option a was boring, option b could wait & option c wasn’t appealing (I find CBD’s all much the same).

The result: I feel fantastic!  The pool was tiny, about 12 metres!  But, I jumped in and pumped out a hundred laps!! It was a quick, fun (and dizzying!) workout.  And I am re-energised.  I’ll be doing that again.

PS – I’m in Sydney tonight with a few TPCer’s for the BRW Best Places to Work Awards.  Wish us luck!

Leaders of fast growing businesses must become masters of delegation.  Why? Because fast growth creates more work.  More work that continues to land on the desk of the leader is unsustainable (& not much fun!)

Delegating comes naturally to some people.  For others, it can be something they know of but struggle to really nail it.

The way I see it, delegating is just a fancy term to describe when I ask for help.  For example, at home, if you ask your partner to please buy some milk while they are out, you’ve just delegated. It’s that simple.

At work, if you take 5 mins to teach someone how to fill a shift when a team member calls in sick – you’ve just delegated. Simple.

In my experience, if I ask nicely, people like to help.  Delegating works for them because they get more responsibility and it works for me because I have one less job to do.

Delegation.  It’s just asking for help.

Every morning at The Physio Co we run a short, sharp huddle.  This stand-up meeting is called ‘To The Point’ and it’s on from 10:05-10:17am without fail.

The purpose of To The Point is to keep our team aligned and focussed on bringing our Painted Picture of 2012 vision to life.

To The Point to is good fun and THE most important meeting that The Physio Co support team have.

A daily 12-minute meeting with 5-7 people contributing needs lots of discipline. Everyone arrives by 10:04 and our To The Point Captain kicks off at 10:05 sharp.  Being late or unprepared is not an option.

The concept of a daily huddle was introduced to me by Verne Harnish and is based upon the way John D. Rockefeller ran his business, Standard Oil (now Mobil). Rockefeller’s disciplined approach replaced the helter-skelter methods of most growing businesses and catapulted him to lead his industry way back in the 1800’s.

Since 2009, The Physio Co has been using a Rockefeller-style meeting rhythm that has improved the way we communicate and provided a daily focus on what is important.

The Physio Co team and I LOVE welcoming guests into our support centre to join us for a To The Point.  If you’d like to join us, grab the details from over here and make it happen.
